It is the reason the lit thing stands out.The concept takes one sentence and a lot of discipline. Choose two or three features and let the rest of the property stay dark. Good candidates
Some things take light well and some do not. Anything with texture picks up light and shows it off, because light raking across a rough surface creates shadow and shadow creates interest. Smooth surfaces light up evenly and stay dull. Shape helps too: a tree with structure, an arch, a column, a gable peak.
How people get it wrong
The failure mode is easy to describe: too many accents. The homeowner sees one lit feature and wants more, then a third, then the corners of the house, then the shrubs. Once the whole yard is bright, nothing is emphasized, which means the money bought brightness rather than effect. Restraint is the actual skill here.The best accent plans tend to look almost underdone on paper and exactly right on the property at night, which is why they are hard to sell and easy to appreciate.

Accent lighting rarely stands alone. The other layers are path and bed lighting, security coverage, and the house itself. It is the difference between a lit property and a designed one.
One more thing about brightness
Accent fixtures are usually dimmer than people expect. After dark the threshold is low, and overshooting looks harsh rather than impressive. The goal is emphasis, not visibility.
From below or down out of a tree
Direction changes the whole character. Light from below is not how daylight works, and that is the effect. Downlighting comes from above, the way light normally does, so nobody notices the technique.
Plants grow. The aim drifts
Anything aimed at a tree or a shrub drifts out of alignment over the years. Growth closes over a fixture, and mulch, mowing and weather move ground mounted units. It is a small thing that makes a big visual difference. Re aiming every couple of seasons keeps the plan looking the way it was designed to.The test is always the same: go outside at night and look at it. If a fixture has drifted off the subject, it is a five minute adjustment.
